Background of the Football for Hope Movement
The Football for Hope Movement is the key element of the strategic alliance between FIFA and streetfootballworld. The movement aims to fully utilise the role of football in society to contribute to the UN Millennium Development Goals. It will promote best practice in the fields of Health Promotion, Peace Building, Children’s Rights & Education, Anti-Discrimination & Social Integration and the Environment by bringing together, advising, supporting, and strengthening the sustainable social and human development programmes of local partner organisations.
Football for Hope Centre Concept
FIFA and streetfootballworld aim to build 20 Football for Hope Centres (5 in South Africa, 15 in other African Countries) as part of and through funds raised by the official campaign for the 2010 FIFA World Cup™, “20 Centres for 2010”. This project will benefit 20 socio-economically disadvantaged African communities by providing local organisations (the “centre hosts”) with the infrastructure to strengthen and expand their work in the area of Development through Football. The 20 centres will not only provide opportunities to play football, but will mainly serve as a place where the local community can gather and access public health and education services thus improving basic education, preventing diseases and promoting health care as well as encouraging the social integration of minorities and disadvantaged populations.
20 Centres for 2010 – A Design Challenge
The infrastructure of the 20 Football for Hope Centres will consist of a building with facilities dedicated to youth education and public health as well as a small-size artificial turf football pitch (20mx40m). Each centre will be designed in coordination with the Centre Host in order to create the most efficient and effective spaces for its programmes. The design will use sustainable building techniques and engage the local community through the use of local materials and labour.
Architects throughout the African continent are being challenged to develop an anchor within the lives of communities by designing a Football for Hope Centre containing a small-size football pitch with adjacent community youth facility for health and educational purposes. (See programme for more details)
The clients will be selecting which firm(s) they would like to work with and in order to present these fairly and openly we are asking interested parties to participate in a design challenge that is representational of the initiative. You will have approximately 3 weeks to develop a concept design that will be then presented to the clients.
