All information related to the site, Nyaya Health, and criteria and guidelines is available online at www.openarchitecturenetwork.org/challenge/asia. Those who have registered and paid the submission fee have access to additional information about the site, client and the specific needs of the challenge partner in the "Competition Details" menu.

Are the existing buildings part of the design?

No, designs should be from the ground up.

Who can answer my questions about Nyaya Health's work in Nepal?

Nyaya Health's own website is a great place to learn more about your community partner.

Does the presentation board need to be translated?

All boards must be submitted in English first. Translations are not a requirement as the jury will be English speaking. That said, making translations available in Nepali would benefit your community partners at a later stage in the Challenge.

Just wondering if there has been any new information in this regard? Perhaps just post a couple more detailed photos of the site or a sketch of the site perhaps. Just something a little more specific so we're not designing in a vacuum. I feel topography will play a major roll in this design. Thanks.

1. is the site up the hill or at the base,

the site is up the hill but on a flat land.

2. is it far removed from the village,

about an hour trek from the village at the base but there is a settlement right by the site as well.

3. is a portion of the site on a relatively flat area,

yes, more details after the site visit.

4. what is the relationship of the two acre site in question to the existing health clinic.

the two acre area includes several buildings. please look at the footprint for the size for the new building.

5. Is that existing health clinic to be abandoned or incorporated into this facility. Is that to our discretion

the existing clinic will not be abandoned. Please also note that the rules of the competition do not allow building on existing structures.

Sorry about the poor wording.

The sketchup site is about 1/2 acre. There is another 1/2 acre for expansion adjacent to the site, but that is not depicted on the sketchup site. Our apologies.

Regarding the issue of the footprint, the indoor space of 175 sq meters is a rough guide. You are correct that the overall size of the building's footprint there is even more lee-way. Apologies for our non-rigorous use of these terms.

i think you should follow the normal steps to enter competition, as if you have to pay. Afterwards when it comes to the payment screen, there you will see a link to the list of developing countries, check your country there, if you see it on the list, the page tells you to contact them via an email.And you let them know that you are from a developing country and some personal information to enable them to register you to the competition.I am in the same position as you are, and i am awaiting answer to my mail.

I just wonder why all the questions haven't been answered yet. These are very good questions and really important for our design. Is there anyone who is in charge of the process? When can we get more information? I also have some questions besides others. Do you have sewage, water supply, electricity system? Do you need a bathroom inside building or just a attached lavatory? Also, have you extended the deadline to Feb 14? and will it be the final deadline? Thanks a lot! Hope you could answer us as soon as possible!

Hi - I understand that Nyaya Health will be providing more detail on the brief in the coming weeks. Also, because this information is coming late, the project deadline may be being delayed until late February. In anticipation of this, I am posting some of the issues we feel need clarification, and perhaps these can feed into the brief update.

Deadline - Late February?

Temperature - The brief states a range of 10-24C, the wiki states a range of -18-43C. The difference here is highly significant in the design.

Site Plan - An exact site location, relation to other buildings, and more detailed topography would be a real help.

Foundations - Are there any details available on the type of ground, and implications for foundations?

Site Purpose - We are assuming that this is a Primary Care Centre, supported with telemedicine methodologies. The community centre aims to get the community more involved with health, provide education, and make the most of any Internet connectivity which is achieved. However, some clarification on the relation of this building to the Bayalpata hospital, and the centre in the pictures would be useful.

Materials - It is difficult to find reliable information on the Internet on local materials. We understand clay is used in the local area and that bamboo is used a lot in Nepal. Also, sometimes for structural purposes it can be helpful to get materials not generally used locally, such as steel. Some pointers on availability would be helpful.

Power - It seems the grid is unreliable, but is it available?

Costings - How much should we include in our budget? We presume foundations, building materials, labour, furniture are included. We presume IT and health equipment is not.

Water - There is very little information on availability of water, but a clean water source is important in a health clinic. There are mentions of there being a surplus of streams. Can you provide any more detail on this?

Why does the video show another building complex? :kstohr

Hi all,

There was a question as to why the video included a fly over of another building complex. Here's the deal: That second building complex is an abandoned hospital more than a mile away from the site. There was discussion of using this building, but one of the reasons that it is abandoned is that it is a difficult trek up hill which made it inaccessible to many in the area who were ill or disabled. The site selected is much more accessible and centrally located.

Just to clarify that the hospital is not in fact less accessible to the ill or disabled. It was abandoned because of political issues 25 years ago. The reason we are going with the lower site is because the paved road still has not reached the hospital and there have been some political issues with the water access. It is purely a logistical problem and has nothing to do with access. There are numerous (perhaps even more) communities for whom the Badelgada (hill) site is more accessible. That hospital will be renovated eventually, as the government and several communities demand it, but for now it was not a suitable site logistically for the telecomm center.

Dear Duncan Maru,

I have read your detailed pdf file about the project. And I think everybody registered should be warned about the new differences, if I have understand the matter thoroughly, I think it is just more than inconsistency that happened, since even the name of the project is changed from "telemedicine center" to "telecomm center". Now I will try to address the changes and some important points, I request you to feedback me if I am wrong because I think everybody is in the same confusion.

As the most striking part in your pdf, it is written that "Note that no patients will be treated at this location, and clinicians utilize telemedicine applications locally at clinic sites (via bandwidth provided by the telecomm hub)." So now we are not asked to design a building where the people will be treated with telemedicine techniques. When we juxtapose your program and the program at OAN page, it is seen that there are no counseling rooms or AV telemedicine consultation/training room at your program but, some kind of accommodation rooms, kitchen, bathroom etc..The whole project, the concept of the project is now altered, am I wrong? I think we are not designing a health facility anymore.

Another point comes up with the site description in the pdf. It is written that it is seven minutes walk from the new clinic whereas at OAN page it is written that site is just next to the “new clinic”. Is the project site visible in the video that is placed at OAN page? And about the building composition, unlike OAN site, in the pdf it is explicitly mentioned that a two storey building is addressed.

And also about the building materials, it is written that “Most citizens do not expect
facilities, particularly those pertaining to health, to be made of clay an thatch
materials”…If it is all about the cognition of people, I think the feeling of hygiene can be given with any kind of building material as long as it is kept clean. I think you have concerns about the building materials in case they are of “mud technology”. And in pdf there is a positive accentuation on concrete and tin roofed systems. My crucial question is: Is an organization of people as labor with their vernacular building techniques (mud-bricks, slate roofs, stone, wood) that they did use on their residential buildings impossible? I am not asking this because I am romantically against reinforced concrete, ready made bricks or tin roofs but if such an organization and appreciation of people’s techniques are possible, then there may be four main benefits we may have:
1. there will be less dependence to 10-hours-drive-far Dhangadi
2. local poor people can be employed instead of remote contractors during construction process
3. vernacular techniques are proved to last longer than industrial materials.
4. the vernacular buildings as far as I have seen from picasa albums looks very appealing, while the others look unfamiliar and I do not think they are sustainably designed. for a NGO building I think a familiar design with contribution of people is a “functional” specialty.

We apologize deeply for the changes we have made, and the slowness with which we have made them. We know you all have worked very hard already. We are a young organization, our net connectivity to the outside world in rural Far Western Nepal is very poor, and it took us some time to fully understand our best strategy for telemedicine and telecommunications. The design process is a continuous process of learning and refining. We cannot speak for the OAN judges, but we hope that they select the most innovative and flexible design team rather than the one that follows our suggestions the most.

For very practical reasons, we had to switch the focus of our work to the current PDF. That said, as this is a continuous process and dialogue, please feel free to take or leave any of our suggestions and ideas. The PDF we provided is the most up-to-date information about how we think; if you think we are misguided on any aspect, please feel free to correct our thinking in your designs. We are asking a lot of flexibility for you designers; please expect the same flexibility and open-mindedness from us.

Now, with respect to your specific comments:
-after much discussion and investigation, we felt that a telecomm hub is much more feasible and replicable than a telemedicine center. hopefully you can accommodate your designs accordingly. also, if you feel you have incorporated something quite unique or innovative that is appropriate to clinical settings, you can certainly keep those in your design and we can see how we might be able to work it in.
-the site is indeed very near to but not adjacent to the clinic. after the OAN/AMD site visit, we realized better what was feasibile for the competition and we changed the site. we will provide detailed photos as soon as technically possible (getting big MBs from achham is tough).
-yes, there are local groups that can build using the mud technologies and you are welcome to design incorporating that. your arguments for using mud technology are sound, and you are correct that reinforced concrete structures will require assistance from dhangadi.
-the two-story building is just a suggestion based on the desires of the clinical staff. most mud vernacular designs are two stories as well. you may design a single-floor structure, or two structures as well if you like.

We greatly appreciate your hard work; please lets keep the dialogue going to help you to make all your efforts come to full fruition.

As long as designers, Nyaya Health and OAN keep the dialogue effective we can beat the odds. However we must share our ideas swiftly as time is running out, first OAN should update the Asia Challenge details according to the new pdf at once, before more works of designers are done in vain...Other than this your latest post is explanatory, and my questions are fairly responded thank you for this. Also sketch up models are of great help. With the arrival of exact site pictures ( or description of it in the present pictures on picasa albums and video if they contain it) I think we can concentrate on our proposals sincerely in a detailed way. Petty, compared to the main issues but there is one more thing that has to be clarified. On the sketch up model of the site the directions text is not fixed, it changes with the angle of camera. As we all know, to utilize solar radiation the directions has to be known.

Looked through the Dec. 6th photos, and might have missed something, but it looks as though there's no photos of the new site, only site photos of the clinic (former grain storage) and the abandoned hospital up on the hill.

Am i missing something, or is there no photos of the new site that is portrayed in that Sketchup Model? If not, that's fine, just wanted to know if i'm missing something. Thanks.

You are correct. We apologize for the confusion and our slowness in getting posted this critical information. Unfortunately those are just the ones taken by the OAN team on their visit. We decided on the site a little after their departure so they couldn't bring the pictures with them. The actual site pictures have to get transferred from achham which is not easy. We are trying to get them uploaded ASAP. We had thought that they would be ready by jan. 1 but now it is looking more like by jan. 6, hopefully.

A couple quick questions...

1. Is the site as depicted in the Sketchup model terraced, or are the 'terraces' in the model, just representing a continuous slope?

2. Can we assume that the trees located on the Sketchup model are accurate in their location, or were they just sprinkled to convey generically that there are trees on the site.

3. Can you characterize, the soil conditions for us? In other words, to what extent, in terms of labor and soil conditions, can we regrade certain areas? I noticed, through site photos of this region, that terracing land is done quite frequently. Are the conditions at this site, suitable for terracing?

4. According to this image: http://wxmaps.org/pix/casia5.00hr.png, the wind comes from a Southwesterly direction. Can we assume this is the overall direction of the wind at this site, or does the mountain terrain around this site, channel the wind typcially in some other direction?

5. Considering south is 'up' the hill, does the hill (mountain) continue up at such an angle that the site falls in the shade of the mountain quicker in the morning or evening hours than it would have if located in the valley? This will effect the possible use of solar energy, among other passive heating/cooling concerns.

6. Can you give us a sense, through images perhaps, what these 25 tall Wi-Fi towers look like? Are they a prefabricated, stand alone structures, or does the relay equipment work just as well if it's hoisted up 25 feet? Just wondering how much flexibility there is in accommodating these towers.

(I've found info for Kathmandu Valley that indicates a prevailing wind from West, but am of course hesitant to extrapolate this info to the current site.)

for number 5; I think south is down the hill, I checked for the directions in sketch up menu...and at the page where the model is found nyaya has written "Please note that the green axis pointing into the plot of land is due south." The pointing part of the green axis is down the hill..Also another way is that when you switch the shadows on it is seen that the sun shines on the hill.But I am not sure this is my interpretation...

When I view the model in 'top' view, a solid green axis shoots up toward the top (up the hill and into the plot of land). A dashed or dotted green axis, however, shoots in the opposite direction, away from the plot of land. I apologize again for the confusion. I have reposted the information with some clarifications. Please note that the solid green axis pointing into the plot of land is due south. The clinic sits along a hill rising up from Sanfe. The clinic is to the north of the site (in the direction of the dotted green line), about 400 meters line-of-sight, seven minutes by foot. The hospital on the hill in Bayalpata is to the east of the site, about 2000 meters line-of-sight and 60 minutes by foot. The hill does not obstruct sunlight to the plot, although surrounding trees do provide some cover. The prevailing wind is SW to NE, strongest in February through July, this too is largely unaffected by the hill. The soil contains about 50 centimeters of loose top-soil; the terraces as shown are drawn accurately but re-terracing for design purposes is quite achieavable.

Thanks to all for your thoughtful inquiries.

1. The actual plot of land is in fact terraced as shown. We tried to make the vertical distance for each step accurate.

2. The trees are done not 100% precisely, but are close. Hopefully the photos when we can get them from Achham will clarify this.

3. Both regrading and terracing are possible. The civil engineers did some regrading in their site about 2 minutes from the clinic on the same soil. Also many folks build traditionally in the region using terracing strategies.

4. We will inquire about this. The site is certainly protected by the surrounding hill from the wind.

5. The hill does continue and provide some shade. We will try to get a more detailed assessment of shade here, and the new photos will help.

6. The technology does not require any particular tower, just a line-of-site. It can be placed on top of a building, in a tree, etc. Significant flexibility provided there is some solid structure. The estimates provided on the tower are just to provide an upper estimate for costing purposes.

Could someone post a map showing the locations of the new clinic, the abandoned hospital and the telecommunications center site? I can't reconcile the directional comments on the site model page with the Nyaya Health marker on Google Earth and the site visit video.

Putting markers on Google Earth would be especially helpful because of the ability to visualize all three dimensions.
